Minutes:

Board member Carol Todd stated that she had the opportunity to speak with a teacher at McIntosh Middle School who shared with her a service organization who donated supplies to the students of that school.  In having a few other conversations there are many service organizations (churches and other types of organizations) who at the beginning of this school year donated supplies to our students.  We know we have homeless students and we know what our foreclosure rate is and so there are many more needier students this year then there have been in previous years.  It is very difficult to thank each and every organization and each and every person who helped our children with their supplies this year, but she would just like to say an overall thank you for those who took money out of their budgets.  We all have very limited budgets now to help our children.

Board member Carol Todd stated that it was a pleasure to be in North Port and would like to recognize Dr. Kenney the principal of North Port High School.  He is a published author and an author of a book on dropouts.  She is in the process of reading the book and what she has read she is very impressed and thanked Dr. Kenney for sharing his thoughts and publishing the book.

Board member Shirley Brown stated that she has heard from teachers and staff and many were very impressed this year that we had Superintendents and Assistant Superintendents out the first day of school checking to make sure everything was going right.  There were a few parents that had been upset that their children were not at the bus stop.  They were KG students and the bus driver did not leave the students at the corner unless the parents were at the corner to pick up the KG students.  When the parents heard that this was the policy of the bus driver that they were not going to release the students unless the parents were at the corner; the parents were happy to hear that they aired on the side of safety and were more than happy to go to the school and pick up their children.

Board member Shirley Brown stated to continue to tell the parents to watch out for the Swine Flu.  Check your children's temperature in the morning if they are not feeling well.  If a child comes to school with a fever and sits next to somebody on the bus and those people on the bus sits next to somebody in the school it can spread very quickly.  Please remember to check children's temperatures before you send them to school or perhaps when they come home from school if they have a sore throat or are just not feeling well. We want to keep this contained and not let it spread through the systems as this can easily spread in the school systems.

Board member Shirley Brown stated she appreciated all the support that we are getting from our staff and Superintendents in making the school district run very well the first week of school.

Board Chair Caroline Zucker stated that it was an easy school opening and it was because of all of the staff, community, teachers, bus drivers, custodians; everyone helping.  We are very fortunate to have the district that we do.
